Welcome new shooters

Monday was a busy morning at the range, we had 11 ladies who completed their Basic Pistol Class with the live fire portion of their class.  To say that we a GREAT group of new lady shooters is actually an understatement.  They were AWESOME!!

Their attention to detail, following instructions and getting the job done allowed them plenty of trigger time and getting familiar with pistol shooting.  Their paper targets were FILLED with holes by the end of the morning.
What I enjoyed the most was watching their growth during the class.  Many had never handled pistols, or were extremely nervous, or simply didn't understand how much fun shooting can be.  At the end of the class, they were eager to shoot more, and everyone had a big smile!
At the close of this season we have 15 new lady shooters — I know everyone will make them feel welcome and will give a lending hand when needed.

Special thanks to the supporting instructors, Niles, Jack and Dennis.  Breaking our ladies into smaller teams allowed everyone to have the support they needed and kept our range safe!

Hats off ladies to a job well done!

Foam backers

I changed out 5 of the foam backers this morning and turned a couple more over.
I took down the 5 yard targets. The metal stands are in the storage container if anyone needs them

We talk about being aware of what is behind your target. One of the 15 yard targets was behind a 5 yard target, depending on where you stood. You can see in the photo that the 15 yard target stand was completely destroyed.

Retama has a garage sale Saturday starting at 8:00. Ocassionally there are guns on these sales. Shop early!

The gun range dinner is March 25th. Mark your calendars. The Henry .22 rifle for the drawing has been ordered. You do NOT need to be present to win.

22LR challenge -this Saturday!

Hi all

Tried shooting  charcoal with your 22LR?
Want to try a 22LR challenge this Saturday at Coyote Arms Shooting range in Edinburg!
Are any of your guys interested in trying this??
Robert Gillis and I are thinking of going!!!  Any more takers?

We're having our 22LR MC match on 2/25/17 hammer down at 10am. Leave Retama at 8-30a

If you all are interested in joining or just to watch, please come on by. Planning on shooting? please sign up at:

Stages usually run about 8-10 stages, depending on how manu shooters joins. Stages are as follows: 3 stages with paper target that generally go from 30-50 yrds. Splitting playing cards, toothpick and matchsticks at 30 yrds. 5 individual metal targets with color stands, were you pick a card and shoot target in order of color from the card and usually from 30-75 yrds. Sometimes we shoot dumdum lollipops at 50 yards, or shooting an pill glued on top of a matchstick heads, but must only hit pill and no not breaking or grease mark matchstick to score. And shoot a large plate rack with 8 tartgers from 4" down to 1/2", and small plate rack with 8 targets from 2" down to 1/4" from 30 to 50 yds.

It's really fun once you try it.

Practiscore results

Image 1 shows the penalty points for the shotgun teams.

Image 2 shows the combined results of all the shooters. The lower the score, the lower the time. Lowest score wins.
Team A had the lowest score (fastest time) of 169 points.
Congratulations to Team A. The shooters present voted to pay all the entry money to the winning team. Team A won $115 to divide up.
Team A is Brad Schierer, Judy McGavic, David McGavic, and Bonnie Fogg. They probably will use the prize money to buy more ammo.

This was the first time we have shot a team event. Everyone seemed to enjoy it. Consensus is we need more pratice for timed events.

The next practice steel shoot is next Thursday at 9:30. Brings lots of ammo.

Saturday Shootout raw scores

I attached a photo of our shootout score page that includes the team member names. Teams were drawn at random.

Team D was the best shot gun team.
Team E was the best rifle team.
Team A was the best pistol team.

We had 27 shooters and 36 bakery. That left 2 donuts for the border patrol.

Bonnie entered each shooters score by team into a scoring program called Practiscore.
The actual times for each rifle and pistol shooter were entered. Shotguns don't  shoot for time so each shotgun shooter was given a 30 second time and then penalty points were added for each missed clay.

The practiscore results follow in a second email.

Henry Golden Boy offer

Does anyone want to buy a discounted Henry Golden Boy .22 rifle?

We plan on giving one of these rifles away free at the gun range dinner in March. When Bonnie contacted Henry Arms about door prizes, they sent her back the attached pdf offer. We can buy a Golden Boy .22 for $350.
That's $70 to $100 below the best price I have seen.
The gun range is going to order one of these. If you are interested in purchasing one, we could just as easily order two.
If interested, contact Bonnie or I today.

This week, Feb 13

Tuesday morning: shotgun shooters at 10:00 am. 9 shooters last week. Hope it doesn't rain on you.

Friday morning 10 to noon: practice time to finish up the level you are on for the Marksmanship Program.  We need to draw a line and order tje awards for our March dinner.
You can continue with the program after Friday, even into next season, but we need to get awards ordered.

There is a shootout Saturday morning at 10:00 at da Range. Participation is dropping off, so we are trying a new team competition.
Randomly picked teams will have one shotgun shooter, one rifle shooter, and one pistol shooter. The scoring will be a combination of targets hit and time. Entry fee is $5 per shooter. Prize money paid to the team.
Bring your favorite gun or two and $5 bills.

You will put your name in either a shotgun, a rifle, or a pistol bucket. A name will be drawn from each bucket, and those 3 shooters become a team.

Shoot safe,

Come shoot steel

Thursday morning, tomorrow, is the first "Let's Shoot Steel" class at da Range. 9:30 am start.
Shooting steel is not only fun, but it is a great way to learn more about gun handling, trigger control, and proper sight picture.

Come to da Range at 9:30 to hear about this growing sport and try shooting steel. Bring plenty of ammo and as many magazines as you have.

Basic Pistol Class Friday, Feb 10, 9:30 to 11:30
There is still space available for anyone who is interested in taking the NRA Basic Pistol Course. Two sessions: classroom on Feb 10 and live fire on Feb 24. $50 includes both sessions.
This class is for the new pistol shooter. Have guns in your rig, but the spouse doesn't  shoot?  This is the perfect class to learn proper gun handling.  Bonnie Fogg is a great instructor. Contact her for the class.

We are going to shoot Marksmanship targets on Friday, Feb 17.  Your progress on Feb 17 will determine which award you receive at the gun range dinner. The Marksmanship program doesn't end - you can continue shooting after Feb 17, even into next year; but we need about a month to make certain the awards arrive.

Want to join the NRA?  Bonnie or I can get you a discount rate of $30 per year.

The next pistol shootout is Saturday, Feb 18, at da Range.
